Wireless Thermometer Hygrometer

A wireless thermometer hygrometer is an easy and effective way to monitor both the temperature and the relative humidity in your home. If you're wondering why you'd want to monitor those things, we'll explain. And if you're interested in purchasing a wireless hygrometer, we'll tell you which is the best selling hygrometer on Amazon (which also happens to be our favorite).

What is a Thermometer?

You probably know that a thermometer is an instrument that measures temperature. Most people have at least one thermometer in their homes, on their thermostat, though many homeowners have more than one. People generally prefer to keep the temperature in their homes around 72 or 73 degrees Fahrenheit, give or take a few degrees. Some keep it a bit cooler in winter in order to save money on heating costs and of course it will be warmer in summer if you don't have air conditioning in your home.

What is a Hygrometer?

A hygrometer is an instrument that measures relative humidity, or the amount of water vapor in the air. Relative humidity is expressed as a percentage, comparing the amount of water vapor currently in the air to the amount of water vapor the air could hold at its current temperature.

Temperature is important because the warmer the air is, the more moisture it can hold. So if, for instances, the air holds half the amount of moisture it can hold at the current temperature, the relative humidity is 50 percent. Fifty percent, by the way, is the most humidity you should have in your home if you want to avoid mold, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

People generally feel most comfortable with the relative humidity just a bit lower than that, maybe 40 to 45 percent. When the relative humidity is too high, the home may feel stuffy or what people often refer to as muggy. When the relative humidity is too low, people often get chapped lips and dry, itchy skin.

Some people purchase a wireless thermometer hygrometer, a single device which displays both temperature and relative humidity.

Do You Need a Wireless Hygrometer?

While most people have thermometers in their homes, hygrometers are a little less common.

Why are home thermometers so common? They provide information you can use when determining how to best adjust the temperature in your home, both for maximum comfort and to protect your home and your pocketbook. And how does maintaining specific temperatures do those things? Well, if it gets too cold inside your home in winter, pipes may freeze and burst. Every homeowner knows that is a disaster. Keeping the heat turned too high is hard on the pocketbook, though. You want to strike the right balance.

It is similar with regard to relative humidity. Hygrometers provide information you can use to determine how to adjust the relative humidity in your home, for maxim comfort and to protect your home from mold and other problems.

Relative humidity that is too high can lead to mold growth and of course homeowners want to avoid that, but humidity that is too low can cause problems, too. It can lead to dry skin and chapped lips, a common problem in wintertime when central heating causes dry air in many homes. It can even damage furniture, causing the wood to warp.

If the relative humidity is too low or too high in your home, you can take steps to adjust the humidity. Using an air conditioner in summer decreases the humidity, as does using a dehumidifier. If you need to increase the humidity, using a humidifier can help. A hygrometer lets you know if the humidity in your home is in the moderate, comfortable range.

And if you're going to have a hygrometer, it might as well be a wireless one. That way you can put it anywhere in the home you like and it's simple to install. A wireless thermometer hygrometer includes a thermometer and hygrometer in one easy-to-use device. They are readily available and more affordable than you might think. They run on batteries.

Our Favorite Wireless Thermometer Hygrometer

Our favorite thermometer hygrometer is this one from AcuRite and, as we mentioned earlier, it's the top selling hygrometer on Amazon. It is wireless and runs on just one AA battery. In addition to displaying the current temperature and relative humidity, it stores daily high and low temperature and humidity readings.
